MTSU Falls Sunday to Drop Series Against Evansville
3/12/2023 4:47:00 PM | Baseball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – For the second day in a row, Middle Tennessee Baseball was unable to overcome an early hole against the Evansville Purple Aces at Reese Smith Jr. Field, dropping the series finale in the Sunday rubber matchup, 5-3.
Evansville scored the game's initial five runs, with the Blue Raiders mounting a rally in the ninth. Pinch hitter Tatsunori Negishi drove two runs in on a one-out triple down the right field line, before scoring on a wild pitch one at bat later.
The top of the order was up and the tying-run was on deck, but Middle Tennessee was unable to generate another baserunner in the frame.
The Purple Aces opened the scoring on a first inning, bases-loaded fielder's choice before creating separation with a pair of two-out runs in the fourth. Solo home runs in the seventh and eighth innings made it a five-run contest heading into the ninth.
The loss drops the Blue Raiders to 7-8 at the conclusion of non-conference series play. MTSU has one more non-league test remaining until the Conference USA opener.
The Skipper Speaks
"Evansville is a good team. They're older and didn't make a lot of mistakes. They didn't give us a whole lot and they took advantage of anything we gave them. We did some good things to try and play damage control but playing catch-up was not a good position to be in," said head coach Jerry Meyers.
"If we had won yesterday or today or won the series, the work [leading into the next game] would be the same. We're going to focus on some of the things that we didn't do well enough to get over the hump this week."
By the Numbers
2-3: LF Jackson Galloway led the team offensively with a 2-3 afternoon, with two doubles and a walk.
.667: MTSU had a .667 on-base percentage Sunday in the leadoff spot.
1-10: Conversely, the Blue Raiders were 1-10 on the day with runners in scoring position.
.212: Middle Tennessee's pitching held Evansville to .212 overall hitting in the series finale.
Blue Raider Notes
With a first inning walk, Jeremiah Boyd has reached base safely in all but one game in 2023. Eston Snider went 1-3 Sunday and matches Boyd's mark in that department, with only one game this year where he has not reached base.
JT Mabry extended his hitting streak to 11 games, going 1-5 in the leadoff spot Sunday.
The start was the first weekend appearance for RHP Bryant Beranek, after starting two midweek contests previously. The freshman took the loss in 2.2 innings pitched.
Next Up
MTSU is next in action this Wednesday for a midweek contest against Tennessee Tech. First pitch from Reese Smith Jr. Field is set for 6:00 p.m.
The Blue Raiders will conclude its 16-game opening homestand next weekend with a three-game series against WKU to open the C-USA slate. First pitch for that series' opener is also scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
