MURFREESBORO, TENN.— Over the past week, there's been a lot of players that you could say are on a hot streak for the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raider (19-6) softball team. You might argue that there's none that's been more impressive over the past week than tonight's starting pitcher: Kamryn Carcich. A lot of people might agree with you on that, even given the fact that the Blue Raiders have swung the bats as well as some of the best teams in the country of late.
But tonight, it was once again a stellar performance out of Carcich, who delivered with a five-hit shutout to give the right-hander shutouts in back-to-back games in MTSU's 3-0 win over the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks (10-7).
Following her no-hitter against Appalachian State this past weekend, the junior from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, notched four strikeouts in both her third win and third complete game of the season.
At the plate, MTSU was paced by designated player Anyce Harvey. The sophomore from Alabama reached base twice with a single and double and was responsible for two of the three Blue Raider runs.
Harvey got the Blue Raiders on the board in the first inning by driving in Laura Mealer with an RBI single, Harvey's 14th RBI of the year, to make it 1-0.
Harvey wasted no time in her second at-bat, picking up her second RBI of the evening with a two-out double to right field to bring Mealer in for her second run of the game and make it a 2-0 ballgame.
In her only at-bat of the evening, Julia Garcia smoked a pitch up in the zone over the wall in left field for her first home run on the season to give MTSU an extra insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and make it 3-0 to help preserve the shut out.
By the Numbers
"I'm real pleased with (Carcich) pitching. She comes to work every day. She was in total control tonight and we have those expectations for her right now. (Anyce Harvey) was an RBI machine last year. She takes good swings and her approach right now is really good. She's been working hard in the cages trying to perfect her swing. She's going to hit a lot of doubles for us and at some point in time she's going to hit some home runs for us."
Quote from junior pitcher Kamryn Carcich
"Especially during mid-week (games), you really have to focus on getting ready, mentally, because you're sitting in class all day. You have to flip a switch in the middle of the day and it's hard. Coming into today, I was really thinking about myself and my body and trying to do what I had to do to feed my defense and produce for them. I have to trust them so they can trust me. (Gettting run support early) changes things a lot for me. I can be a lot more aggressive instead of pitching defensively. I can throw strikes and just lean on my defense behind me. It's a really good feeling scoring early."
Quote from sophomore designated player Anyce Harvey
"I just really try to hit my pitch and try to drive in whoever's on. I feel like hitting with runners on makes me more focused. Having a job to do at the plate makes me produce more because I know I have to do something at the plate. I'm really excited to start conference play, because I really feel like we're in a different place right now and we can do some special things this year."
