Blue Raiders Absorb Another Setback at Florida Atlantic
3/26/2023 2:16:00 PM | Baseball
BOCA RATON, Fla. – For the third consecutive game this weekend, the Middle Tennessee Baseball took an early lead but were unable to hold onto it, as the Blue Raiders fell 7-5 to the Florida Atlantic Owls on Sunday at FAU Baseball Stadium.
Suffering the sweep against its Conference USA foe, the Blue Raiders drop to 11-12 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
MTSU did not go down quietly Sunday. Trailing 6-4 in the eighth, 3B Gabe Jennings lifted a fly ball to left and scored LF Jackson Galloway on a sacrifice. Eston Snider pinch hit at bat later and doubled, putting the go-ahead runs in scoring position with two outs. That however was the closest Middle Tennessee came late, as the Owls recreated some margin with an eighth inning run of their own.
The Raiders had two runs in the first, off a Brett Coker double and an error off the bat of Briggs Rutter.
After the Owls got a run back in the second, MTSU made it 4-1 off RBI singles from Rutter and DJ Wright.
FAU would respond however with two runs of their own in the third and another in the fourth to tie the contest 4-4. Then, in the sixth, another two Owl runs gave the home team its lead, which was held onto for the remainder of the day.
By the Numbers
3.0: RHP Eriq Swan tossed three innings in his first series-finale start of the season and struck out three batters across the afternoon.
3-5: Coker was 3-5 with two double and an RBI.
2-4: Rutter, Wright and Jackson Galloway each went 2-4 on Sunday.
Blue Raider Notes
Coker extended his on-base streak to 18 games.
MTSU was outhit for the first time since March 5 against Toledo.
