Middle Tennessee drops 10-4 decision to Alabama at Toyota Field in Huntsville
3/28/2023 9:01:00 PM | Baseball
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Middle Tennessee (11-13, 2-4 C-USA) was able to fight its' way out to a four-run lead in the middle innings, but was unable to claw its' way back after Alabama (20-6, 2-4 SEC) had two innings of four-plus run production in a 10-4 loss at Toyota Field in Huntsville, Alabama.
After going without a single baserunner the first time through the lineup, Middle Tennessee broke through in the fourth inning in a big way. After JT Mabry and Brett Coker singled to lead off the inning, three-hole hitter Jeremiah Boyd sent his team-high fifth home run of the season over the wall in center to give the Blue Raiders a 3-0 lead. Gabe Jennings would add another RBI that plated Jackson Galloway in the inning to give Blue Raider starter Jalen Wirtz a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Alabama would tie it in the bottom of the fourth, with Wirtz surrendering a pair of runs in the frame and being charged with two more earned runs before giving way to freshman Patrick Johnson, who tossed 1.2 innings without allowing an earned run out of the bullpen. Wirtz final line included two strikeouts through 3.1 innings in his second start of the season.
Jack Julian made his third appearance of the season on the mound, coming on in the sixth inning. Alabama took the lead in the sixth via an Andrew Pinckney home run just to the left of the batter's eye to make it 5-4. Julian allowed just one earned run in two innings of work.
Alabama was able to plate five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to stretch the lead to six heading into the ninth inning where it was able to finish off Middle Tennessee.
