Middle Tennessee Erupts for 14 Runs Against FIU to Claim the Series on Saturday
4/1/2023 6:49:00 PM | Baseball
After MTSU scored a run in the first, FIU was able to plate five runs in the first two innings, with four runs coming on four hits in the second inning as the Panthers nearly batted around. Middle Tennessee responded in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs on a two-RBI double by leadoff man JT Mabry to cut the lead in half before FIU plated a pair in the top of the third to grow the lead back to four at 7-3.
MTSU erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 10-7 lead. The inning included JT Mabry's second two-RBI double of the game followed by a two-run shot that just snuck over the wall in left by Jeremiah Boyd, his team-high sixth home run of the season.
The Blue Raiders added another three runs in the fourth. Sophomore Eston Snider got the inning started with a solo shot to left field and JT Mabry brought Luke Vinson in to score his second run of the game on a single to right field, and the inning was capped off by Briggs Rutter's first RBI of the afternoon to make it 13-7. In the fifth inning, FIU got one back after allowing 10 unanswered Blue Raider runs to make it 13-8 before MTSU scored another in the fifth on a Luke Vinson RBI single to bring the score to 14-8.
Freshman pitcher Patrick Johnson allowed just one run in a five-inning save, his second of the year.
Though there was a multitude of players to pick from that had success at the plate, the Blue Raiders were paced by senior JT Mabry, who finished the game 4-for-6 with two doubles, five RBIs, three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.
By the Numbers
17: The number of runs and hits both teams combined for in the game's first three innings today.

The Skipper Speaks
"The wind was blowing hard and creating what looked like tornadoes in the infield during batting practice today," said MTSU Head Coach Jerry Meyers. "On top of that, you knew it was going to be a crazy game from the get-go. The first hit Hamm allowed would've been a routine out on a regular day but the wind shot it down and it was a hit. Coach (Kevin) Nichols does a great job working with our hitters and developing a good gameplan and I thought we got a good feel of what their pitcher wanted to attack us with and go to in certain counts. We did good of getting him in our counts and we did well with that today. Every game is a one-game series for us, so we'll take that into tomorrow."
Player's Perspective – 2B JT Mabry
"In our hitters meetings every day I try to pay attention to what their starters and some of their bullpen guys are going to come at us with. I feel like I've been able to lock in on that and follow it. I trust Coach Nichols and the video and it's worked out. Going in to today we knew that their guy liked to lean on his off-speed stuff, especially with runners in scoring position. We were able to battle and do some damage against him. We competed hard."
Blue Raider Notes
Coker extended his on-base streak to 21 games.
JT Mabry has now hit safely in 21 of his last 22 games, carrying a .402 average on the year.
In conference play, Middle Tennessee is slashing .336/.396/.434 as a team heading into tomorrow's series finale with FIU.
