Clarksville, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee softball (25-13, 5-6) beats Austin Peay (20-14, 8-4) 6-2 tonight at Cathi Maynard Park thanks to a two home run game by shortstop Laura Mealer.
The Blue Raiders got out to an early lead scoring three-runs in the first inning. Julia Garcia drove in two-runs on a bases-loaded single causing Austin Peay to make a pitching change. Mealer then hit her eighth home run of the year on a solo shot in the second inning to increase the lead.
The Governors got on the board in the third inning to cut the lead to three-runs. They then led off the fourth with a triple that was stranded on-base after getting caught in a rundown at the plate. The Blue Raiders were unable to respond in the fifth inning after a leadoff single by Riley Gilmore for her first hit as a starter.
After back-to-back hits in the sixth inning from Amaya Harris and Shelby Echols, Mealer hit a three-run home run this time and her fourth RBI of the game. Gretchen Mead pitched six innings, including four scoreless, before Kamryn Carcich came in to close out the game in the seventh.
By the Numbers
9: Laura Mealer hit her ninth home run of the season.
6: Julia Garcia recorded her sixth multi-hit game.
Quote from Head Coach Jeff Breeden
"I thought we played solid as a team today. Gretchen pitched well and Kam came in to close it out. Mealer hit two monster home runs that will get her back on track. It was a very good midweek tuneup for us leading into this big weekend series."
Quote from Laura Mealer
"I went through a bit of a rough patch in the box, so it felt great to get back in the groove. I have trust in myself, my process, and even more so my teammates."
