Blue Raiders Fall Behind Early in Loss at UTSA
4/14/2023 9:52:00 PM | Baseball
The Blue Raiders fell to 17-15 and 8-5 in Conference USA play after the loss to the league-leading Roadrunners.
The home team had two-run homers in the second and the third inning, before tacking on another un in the fourth on a sacrifice fly.
The Blue Raiders got on the board in the fifth inning on a Mabry RBI groundout and a one-run single off the bat of Brett Coker.
UTSA would however recreate separation with a four-run fifth inning.
One frame later, Luke Vinson lined a two-out, two-run single to right field to cut the deficit to 9-4. But the Roadrunners responded with another four-run frame to make it a nine-run game after six.
Gabe Jennings put the Raiders a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.
The Skipper Speaks
"We didn't execute well. They're a very good team, so when you don't execute, that's what you get. For the most part, when we executed pitches, we made their at bats more difficult. We couldn't string enough of that throughout the night, which put us in a bind. They laid off some pitches that some less experienced lineups swing at or get themselves in some trouble with. There is just not a big margin for error when playing UTSA," said head coach Jerry Meyers.
By the Numbers
4.0: RHP Patrick Johnson went four innings, striking out a batter and walking none. He did however absorb the decision Friday night.
12: The Blue Raiders had 12 hits on the evening, their most in a game since April 2 against FIU.
2-3: Coker was 2-3 with an RBI and a walk.
2.0: RHP Bryant Beranek gave the Raiders two frames of one-run pitching.
Blue Raider Notes
The loss sees the Raiders' six-game C-USA winning streak comes to a close.
MTSU played error-free baseball for the ninth time this year and have just one error in its past four matchups.
The lineup card featured an almost identical lineup used in the most recent five C-USA wins, with only Jennings and Snider flipped in the batting order.
Next Up
The teams will play Game 2 of the series at Roadrunner Field at 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
