Kamryn Carcich throws a complete game in the circle while going 3-for-3 at the plater to lead MTSU
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee softball (26-14, 6-7) took the lead early and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire to take Game 2 against Western Kentucky (23-16, 8-5) 4-2 in Conference USA play at Blue Raiders Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second, after Shelby Sargent walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ansley Blevins, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a two-out RBI infield single from Kamryn Carcich.
MTSU expanded their lead in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring three runs, all thanks to the steallar play of Laura Mealer. Mealer drove in Carcich and Amaya Harris from second and third on a single to center, and advanced to second on the throw home. The sophomore shortstop then stole third during the next at bat, coming around to score on the overthrow from the Hilltopper catcher, giving the Blue Raiders a 4-0 advantage.
WKU was able to cut the lead in half with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth and loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Carcich forced a ground out to herself to finish the complete game at take home the win, her sixth of the season.
Carcich did it all for MTSU on Saturday, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a run and a RBI, while holding WKU to just six hits and two runs in the circle. Laura Mealer nabbed two RBis and scored a run while going 1-for-4 at the plate.
By the Numbers
3: Hits for Kamryn Carcich, doubling her season total in just one game this season. Saturday was only Carcich's eighth game hitting all season. She entered the game batting .200 (3-for-15) on the season and finished the game batting .333 (6-for-18) on the year.
5: Complete games by Carcich this season. It's only the second complete game of those five to not be a shutout. It's the second straight home series Carcich has thrown a complete game in.
23: Stolen bases this season for Shelby Echols, who swiped one bag on Saturday. Her 23 steals ranks her tied for 21st in the nation this season and moves her into a tie for eighth place in program history for most steals in a single season (Lari Mitchell 2014, Precious Birdsong 2017).
Reaction from Head Coach Jeff Breeden
"When we put this team together, speed was out thing. I thought we executed well and did a good job with that. That got us enough runs to hang on.
"(Kamyrn Carcich) did a great job. Great job at the plate and great job in the circle. She got a lot of little flyouts today. She was in control most of the time, got in trouble a couple of times, but I thought she was solid."
Player's Perspective – Kamryn Carcich
"My mindset today was a whole 180 from last night. I put a lot of pressure on myself last night, so being in the same exact situation as I was in last night really showed how much work I put in will show through with the amount of confidence that I have. Last night, I wasn't confident. So today I really just trusted myself and trusted my defense, especially.
"Last night was probably the toughest game that I've had this season mentally. It really took the support from my friends and my teammates and definitely my family. Everyone showed how much they trusted me and how much faith they had in my ability to play. That's really what powered me today."
