Blue Raiders drop Game 1 on midweek home and home to Lipscomb

MTSU unable to quell the hot Bison bats on Tuesday.
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee baseball got behind early and never recovered on Tuesday night, giving up 11 runs to Lipscomb in the game's first five frames before falling 11-1 in seven innings at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
The Blue Raiders (17-18) did not score until the sixth inning, when a Luke Vinson double turned into the team's only run of the night after a wild pitch and an RBI-groundout by Eston Snider. The Bisons (19-17) had already managed to put up crooked numbers in each of the prior frames, with MTSU's first scoreless inning on the mound coming in the top of the sixth.
Lipscomb hit four home runs off of the MTSU arms in those first five innings, as Jake Cothran and Jackson Underwood both put up scoreless outings as MTSU's final two pitchers of the night, with Cothran striking out two and Underwood striking out one. The 11 runs, however, were enough to trigger the run rule after the seventh inning was completed.
By the Numbers
8: The Blue Raider pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts on the evening, led by four from Bryant Beranek, who came into the game in relief of starter Jack Julian in the first inning.
2: It just his second appearance for the Blue Raiders, Jackson Underwood once again kept his opponent off the board. The Murfreesboro native last pitched 0.1 innings in MTSU's loss to Toledo.
Skipper's Corner with Head Coach Jerry Meyers
"It was obvious that we weren't able to set the tone in any kind of positive way. Give a lot of credit to Lipscomb, they swung the bat well. They got us into bad counts and we didn't execute on the mound for sure. We were never able to punch back like we wanted to. The deficit, it's hard to not have that in the back of your mind sometimes, even though it's early in the game. We just weren't good enough."
