TEXARKANA, Texas — Middle Tennessee men's golf's match play semifinal in the Conference USA Championship came down to the wire Thursday for hometown kid Carter Maneth. The Texarkana native took LA Tech's Thomas Henson to extra holes after their teammates had split the other four matches. Maneth eventually fell in 19 holes as the Bulldogs advanced to the conference finals.
Maneth took a one-hole lead on hole 8, the pair's 17th of the day after starting on the back nine, but Henson staved off defeat by taking the 18th. This brought Maneth and Henson back to the par-4 10th, which they had recorded the same score on in each of the previous three times they had played it. Maneth made par, but Henson picked up the birdie for the win.
Michael Barnard and Owen Stamper picked up the No. 2 seeded Blue Raiders' two wins in the match. Barnard defeated Hunter Battles 4&2, securing the victory with an eagle on hole 7. Stamper bested Will Patrick 3&2, clinching with a par on hole 7.
Kevin Jegers fell to Lake Juban 2&1, while Gavin Clements lost 5&3 to C-USA individual champion James Swash.
Coach's Comments: Mark McEntire
"It was a great match today! I feel bad that it came down to Carter's match! He came in and gave us some solid play when Markus was injured. His round yesterday got us to match play.
"I still think we have a chance for an at large bid and will see when the final rankings come out next week."
