MTSU scores all five of their runs with two outs as Carcich tosses her fourth shutout of 2023
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee softball cruised in the circle and came through with timely hits at the plate, easily dispatching UTSA 5-0 on Saturday at Blue Raider Softball Field to take the series.
MTSU (32-15, 11-8 C-USA) scored first for the second game in a row this series, with Julia Garcia scoring Laura Mealer from second with an RBI-single to center field in the bottom of the first after a scoreless top half from starter Kamryn Carcich kept the Roadrunners (8-37, 3-16 C-USA) at bay.
The 1-0 lead was doubled in the bottom of the second, when Amaya Harris came around to score all the way from first base on Shelby Echols two-out double. Harris made a great read on the basepaths, taking off when it was clear the UTSA centerfielder would not reach it before it caromed off the wall.
The Blue Raiders' bats caught on fire in the sixth inning, plating three runs with two outs to help get some insurance before the final frame. Savannah Behabetz came home from third after a Laura Mealer triple into the left-center field gap, while Mealer scored when Ava Tepe tripled off the top of the left field wall. Riley Glimore then singled Tepe home to increase to lead to 5-0, which held through the 1-2-3 top of the seventh from Carcich.
Garcia led the Blue Raiders at the plate with a 2-for-3 day, driving in one run. Mealer scored two runs while driving in one, going 1-for-3. Carcich pitched her seventh complete game and fourth shutout of the season, striking out six Roadrunners while allowing just four hits.

Reaction from Head Coach Jeff Breeden
"I'm glad that we got some insurance there. We started to square the ball up, we had a couple of triples there late in the game and sort of blew it open. We scored early and then they shut us down. We didn't hook anything up in the middle innings so I'm really glad we got it going.
Player's Perspective – Ava Tepe
"Especially that last inning, it was great team offense. We had a sac bunt, moved the runner, Laura hit a triple, Riley hit me in when I was on third. It was a great team inning for us. We do a really good job in pressure situations, we stay pretty calm during that, so it's exciting."
