RUSTON, La. – Middle Tennessee softball (36-18, 15-11 C-USA) eliminated Western Kentucky (30-24, 14-10) at Dr. Billy Bundrick Field Thursday night 7-1 to advance to the next round of the Conference USA Championship. Gretchen Mead allowed just one run in her complete game effort.
The Blue Raiders set the tone early in the first inning off a two-run home run by Anyce Harvey. Amaya Harris singled to get on base for her third hit in the C-USA Championship. Mead started in the circle making her 24th start of the season for MTSU.
MTSU then produced a huge second inning, scoring five runs that started with Shelby Sargent hitting her fifth triple of the season, which leads Conference USA. Sargent came in to score on a wild pitch, extending the lead to three runs. Shelby Echols then drove in another run with a double that scored Ansley Blevins. Laura Mealer followed Echols with a double of her own that scored two more runs. Harvey scored Mealer with an RBI single for her third RBI of the game.
Western Kentucky scored its only run in the bottom of the second after a pair of walks that allowed a run to come across. The Blue Raiders were held scoreless at the plate for the first time in the top of the third inning.
The Hilltoppers threatened to add another run in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on third that reached base on an error. Mead was able to get out of the inning scoreless for her third straight scoreless inning.
Mead earned her 16th win of the season for the third most in C-USA.
