Blue Raiders Fall in Friday’s Matchup at Charlotte
5/19/2023 8:49:00 PM | Baseball
The Blue Raiders raced out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, but allowed 14 unanswered runs in the road loss, starting in the bottom of the second.
Charlotte clinches the three-game series with the win—the last Conference USA series before next week's C-USA Baseball Championships—having previously taken Thursday night's contest between the teams.
MTSU now sits at 25-26 overall and 15-16 in league play. Coming into the night as the conference's No. 7-seed, the Blue Raiders will need a win and help Saturday to move into the sixth spot.
DJ Wright singled to open the scoring in the second, Eston Snider doubled an at bat later, Luke Vinson drove in a run on a squeeze bunt and JT Mabry collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly before Jeremiah Boyd scored from third base on a wild pitch.
However, the Blue Raiders' 5-0 lead quickly evaporated with a Charlotte two-run home run in the bottom of the inning, before the 49ers took the lead for good with a four-run third.
Starting pitcher Jaden Hamm struck out six in 3.1 innings pitched. Ollie Akens, Justin Lee and Daniel Dewey all appeared out of the bullpen Friday night.
The Skipper Speaks
"The second innings was a good inning for us offensively. We get their starter out of there; you look at it and you feel like it gives us momentum. We couldn't hold them and they were able to go ahead in the next inning. We didn't do much in terms of scoring runs, but we had some good at bats throughout and hit some balls hard. They only had a few more hits than we did, but they did a lot more damage," said head coach Jerry Meyers.
By the Numbers
3-4: Jackson Galloway was 3-4 in the loss.
3-5: Brett Coker went 3-5 Friday night.
Blue Raider Notes
Mabry extended his hitting streak to 10 games, and his on-base streak to 11.
Coker had his team-high 20th multi-hit game.
Next Up
The series finale is slated for 11:00 a.m. CT Saturday, before the Blue Raiders briefly return home to embark for the C-USA Championships next week.
With a win, and a LA Tech loss to UTSA Saturday, the Blue Raiders can move up to the sixth seed in the C-USA Championships. Otherwise, MTSU will be the No. 7-seed.
