Blue Raider Soccer Opens 2023 Campaign with Draw
8/17/2023 9:44:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Soccer clawed back from a goal down at halftime to earn a split result with the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns to open the 2023 season Thursday night.
The 1-1 draw at Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium gives the Blue Raiders an early season point in non-conference play.
Graduate Student Cambell Kivisto finished a cross from sophomore Idun Kvaale in the 59th minute to level the score, finding the bottom left-hand corner of the net inside the six-yard box.
The goal highlighted a second half in which the Blue Raiders outshot UL 6-2 and drew five corners while conceding just one.
Rhoden's Roundup
"We dominated pretty much the entire game. We controlled the game and did some good things. The goal we got and the adjustment we asked the players to make, they made it. The fortitude they showed to come back, especially at home, to get a result, while putting themselves in a position where they could have won this game," said head coach Aston Rhoden.
Player Perspective – Cambell Kivisto
"It feels great to be back out with my teammates for one more season. I feel proud for us being able to come back after being down. I think we showed how relentless we were to get back in. It feels good to do the job I've been called to do for my teammates," said Kivisto.
By the Numbers
11: MTSU extends its unbeaten streak to 11 against the Cajuns, with the series dating back to when both sides competed together in the Sun Belt Conference. The Blue Raiders last lost to UL in 2002, Rhoden's first season in Murfreesboro.
13: The Blue Raiders outshot Louisiana 13-5 on the night, and had four shots on target compared to just one for UL.
4: Kivisto's four shots were a team-high. Kvaale and Eleanor Gough each added a trio of shots as well.
10: MTSU had an opening night draw for the first time in 10 years, when it drew UT-Martin 0-0 to open the 2013 campaign.
