Late Goals Seal Win for Blue Raiders
8/20/2023 8:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – With under a minute remaining and Middle Tennessee Soccer leading by a goal, Cambell Kivisto left no doubt who would be walking off the field with a win.
Scoring her second goal of the season in the 90', the Blue Raiders would seal a 3-1 win over the Belmont Bruins on Thursday night at Dean A. Hayes Track & Soccer Stadium.
In a high-tempo match that saw both sides find the scoresheet before halftime, it was MTSU who outshot the Bruins 21-7, with nine shots on target compared to just four for the visitors.
Middle Tennessee drew first blood in the 18' with a goal from Emma Pettersen on the edge of the 18-yard box. Kivisto logged her third point on the season with the assist.
Belmont would equalize in the 26', but the Blue Raiders retook the lead in the 70' on a set piece, with Caroline Manley finding Faith Adje, who scored her first MTSU goal on a header in the six-yard box.
Kivisto is the first Blue Raider to both score and have an assist in a match since Manon Lebargy did so on Sept. 2 last season in a win over Mississippi Valley State.
The Collierville, Tenn. native is also the first MTSU player to score in consecutive games since Eleanor Gough against Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech a season ago (Sept. 4-8), and the first to have three points in a single match since Lauren Spaanstra against Austin Peay (Sept. 4).
Rhoden's Roundup
"I'm proud of the effort tonight. We played a lot of players, and I think everyone who came on the field did the job that they were asked to do. I'm happy with the collective spirit of the group, given that there are so many new and talented players," said Rhoden. "Our bench is also unbelievable in the energy that they bring. That goes a long way in helping us as well."
Player Perspective – Faith Adje
"Just going out on the field, I didn't care how many minutes I got. I wanted to go all out for my team. I was able to finish Manley's assist and get my team that win. The only thing I was thinking about after I scored was hopefully I made my team and parents proud," said Adje.
By the Numbers
4: Idun Kvaale's four shots on the night were a team-high. Gough and Kivisto each followed with three shots a piece.
11: 11 Blue Raiders had shots Thursday night, with eight in that group having at least one on goal as well.
