MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Nick McDevitt has added another familiar face to his staff with the addition of Brett Carey. A former teammate of McDevitt and member of McDevitt's staff at UNC Asheville, Carey joins the Blue Raiders as Assistant Coach/Director of Player Development.
"I'm very excited about adding Brett to our basketball staff," McDevitt said. "He is a very talented and experienced coach who will help our players continue to grow on and off the court."
Carey most recently served as Associate Head Coach at Austin Peay for two years, where he coached 2021 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year Elijah Hutchins-Everett. With Carey coaching the Governors' post players, APSU ranked fifth in the OVC in rebounding and offensive rebounds per game.
Prior to his time in Clarksville, Carey spent four seasons at Indiana State, where he coached 13 All-Missouri Valley honorees and led the Sycamore to back-to-back winning seasons in 2019-20 and '20-21.
Before his stint at Indiana State, Carey spent nine years on the staff at UNC Asheville, including the last two as Associate Head Coach under McDevitt. During his time in Asheville, Carey helped lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back Big South Conference titles in 2011 and 2012 and back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2015-16 and '16-17, claiming the 2016 Big South Tournament title and a share of the 2017 Big South regular season crown.
Between his playing days at Asheville and his return as a coach, Carey played for the NBDL's Asheville Altitude and professionally in Norway before returning to the states as a coach. He spent time coaching at Oak Hill Academy, where he coached future NBA draft picks Brandon Jennings and Marcus Williams, and as a volunteer assistant at South Carolina, where he coached 2006 first-round pick Renaldo Balkman.
Carey was a two-year letterman for UNC Asheville from 1999-2001 where he started in the backcourt both seasons. He led his team to the Big South title game in 2000, earning All-Tournament honors. As a senior, he led the Bulldogs in three-pointers made and free throw percentage. Carey earned second-team All-Conference honors for his play and was named UNC Asheville Male Athlete of the Year and was chosen the Bulldog MVP. As a senior, he finished third in the nation in three-point field goal percentage.
