Blue Raiders finish fifth at the Elon Phoenix Invitational

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The Blue Raiders fired a final round 4-over-par 288 to finish fifth at the Elon Phoenix Invitational at Alamance Country Club. Senior JJ Zimmer led the Blue Raiders at 1-under-par 212 and finished 14th in the individual standings.

UNC Greensboro earned the team title with a three-round total of 19-under-par 833, while East Carolina finished second at 12-under-par 840 and host institution Elon finished third at 10-under-par 842. The Blue Raiders posted a three-round team score of 1-over-par 853 to finish fifth.

Longwood's Justin LaRue claimed individual medalist honors with 54-hole total of 12-under-par 201, while ECU's Carter Busse and Elon's Juan Callejo tied for second at 10-under-par 203. Zimmer led the Blue Raiders with a 1-under-par 212 14th-place finish.

The Blue Raiders will return to action when they compete in the Island at West Bay Collegiate Invitational at West Bay Club on Oct. 6-7 (Sunday-Monday) in Estero, Florida.

The Lineup
• Senior JJ Zimmer led the Blue Raiders with a 14th-place showing at the Elon Phoenix Invitational. Zimmer fired a final round 2-over-par 73 to finish tied for 14th at 1-under-par 212.

• Redshirt junior Markus Varjun and freshman Thad Whitfield finished tied for 15th at even-par 213.

• Redshirt junior Carter Maneth carded a final-round even-par 71 to finish tied for 32nd at 4-over-par 217.

• Redshirt sophomore Sheldon McKnight posted a final round 3-over-par 75 to finish tied for 49th at 7-over-par 220.

• Freshman Charlie Bell rounded out the Blue Raiders with a final round of 5-over-par 76 to finish tied for 76th at 11-over-par 224.

"I am disappointed with our play this week," said Head Coach Mark McEntire. "Again, the course and conditions were difficult, but we could not put together four scores each round, and we struggled to build momentum throughout the tournament."
