No. 28 Blue Raiders split with No. 57 Cornell and Austin Peay in Tuesday doubleheader
2/27/2024 7:31:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Murfreesboro, Tenn.—Following an exciting weekend at the Blue Grey Championships down in Mobile, Alabama, the No. 28 Middle Tennessee State (10-7) men's tennis squad returned home Tuesday afternoon and welcomed ranked foe No. 57 Cornell (7-3) as well as in-state opponent Austin Peay (4-3) to the Adams Tennis Complex. Following a tough 4-2 defeat at the hands of Cornell, the Blue Raiders bounced back to end the day on a high note with a 7-0 win over Austin Peay.
After taking the doubles point against Cornell with wins on courts one and three, the Big Red were able to reel off four wins in singles play to pull off the comeback win. Leo Raquin and Ondrej Horak improved to 12-1 in doubles with the clincher on court one and Shu Matsuoka moved into a tie with classmate Ondrej Horak for second on the team in singles wins with his seventh of the year over Cornell's Felipe Pinzon on court six.
Middle Tennessee took the doubles point against Austin Peay by winning on courts two and three. Kristian Thomas saw his first action as a Blue Raider in doubles play, pairing with Jakub Kroslak to clinch with a 6-2 win as the third pairing. In singles play, Igor Mandou Berranger also made his Blue Raider debut, winning 6-0, 6-0 on court six to clinch the first singles point for MTSU. Javier Cueto Ramos, Shu Matsuoka, Karim Al-Amin, Ondrej Horak and Jakub Kroslak all won in straight sets, as well, to complete the sweep of the Governors.
Head Coach Jimmy Borendame
"Today was tough. We had three matches in two days on Friday and Saturday, so today was a good test. Credit to Cornell, they were solid. We won the tiebreak in doubles but didn't win any other close sets the rest of the match. They won a lot of big points, and that was solid to them. I was happy to see the team rebound in the Austin Peay match. It was great to see Kristian (Thomas) and Igor (Mandou Berranger) play. We have a lot of depth and youth. Jakub (Kroslak) did a good job playing up. Now we're getting ready for the outdoor season this Friday with Texas Tech coming in. Hoping to see all the Blue Raiders back on campus on Friday at 5:00 against Texas Tech."
Player's Perspective: Sophomore Shu Matsuoka
"I'm happy that I was able to win three matches today. I've been struggling some the past few weeks, so it was nice to get those wins today. Moving outdoors Friday will be different tennis and I hope we come out strong from the beginning."
