WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Middle Tennessee's Owen Stamper soared up the leaderboard again on Wednesday at the NCAA West Lafayette Regional, but his bid for a spot as an individual at the NCAA Championship was cut short in a 3-man playoff.
Stamper carded a 68 (-4) in round three, tied for the second-best round of the day. He improved nine spots on the leaderboard, finishing tied for fourth overall at 5-under (211) at the end of 54 holes.
54 holes were not enough, however, as Wisconsin's Cameron Huss and Mississippi State's Garrett Endicott tied Stamper to force a 3-man playoff to determine who would advance as an individual to the NCAA Championship.
Stamper began his day with a bogey on the first hole before reeling off 14 consecutive holes of par or better, including six birdies. He bogeyed 16 and parred 17 and 18, meaning a playoff was necessary to determine the advancing individual.
All three players parred the first playoff hole and bogeyed the second. Stamper was eliminated in the third hole of the playoff. Wisconsin's Huss later clinched his spot in the NCAA Championship on the fifth playoff hole.
Stamper's college career ends with a spot on the 2024 All-Conference USA First Team list as announced by the league office on Wednesday, the second such honor of his career after being named CUSA Player of the Year in 2023.
By the Numbers
15: Stamper's 15 birdies led the entire NCAA West Lafayette Regional field.
68: Stamper shot a 68 on both Tuesday and Wednesday. He was the only player in the field to have multiple rounds of 3-under or better.
4: In par 4s, Stamper finished tied for the third-best scoring average, shooting 4-under for the tournament.
Coach's Comments: Head Coach Mark McEntire
"It was a great week for Owen. I hope he takes this as a confidence booster knowing that he played with the best players in the country and belongs on that stage. We thank him for everything he did for us as a Blue Raider, and we wish him nothing but the best in his professional career."
Coach's Comments: Assistant Coach Payne Denman
"There's obviously some emotion to be that close and come up short. However, after the first nine holes of the tournament, we would've been thrilled to be in that position. Owen played phenomenal the last two days, and I'm super proud of him. I'm grateful to have been a coach for him these last two years, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for him!"
