MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team has been honored with earning the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the seventh consecutive year, dating back to the 2017-18 season.
The award is given to programs that maintained a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 or better on a 4.0 scale (or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale). The Blue Raiders qualified for AVCA Team Academic Award with ease by recording a 3.602 cumulative team GPA. This year over 1,400 collegiate and high school volleyball programs were honored with the award.
"When our staff arrived to MTSU eight years ago, the volleyball program's focus on academics needed a major overhaul. As I sat down with my Associate Head Coach, Jenna Orner and Coach Taylor Holmes, we chose to use the rule of common sense to help our athletes balance high-level volleyball with the rigors of college classes," said MTSU Head Coach Chuck Crawford. "Our players understand the expectation of a 3.6 team GPA minimum each semester and know that if they are struggling, will be assisted with the vast resources MTSU has to offer. This approach has serviced us well as a program. We have graduated engineers, doctors, pilots, teachers, and many others. It is with a great pride that we accept the award from the AVCA for our academic success. I would like to thank our players, Todd Wyant, and all of the MTSU professors that help pave the way for empowering our young ladies, for the rest of their lives."
This past season, three Blue Raiders were named CSC Academic All-District. They were recent graduates Taylor Eisert and Kaylee Oscarson and returning senior Laure Jansen. In addition, Eisert was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team. It was her second All-Academic honor and the program's eighth since 2017.
Other academic highlights included 13 student-athletics making the CUSA Commissioner Honor Roll (3.0 GPA or higher) and five making the CUSA Academic Medal list (3.7 GPA or higher).
