MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Kacper Szymkowiak has taken advantage of every opportunity the No. 45 Middle Tennessee (7-6) men's tennis coaching staff has given him in his debut season. On Friday night at the Adams Tennis Complex, he got another, playing in the top singles spot. The Wroclaw, Poland, native didn't disappoint, tying the match to spark a dominant singles performance in a 4-1 win over No. 55 Utah (6-3).
Middle Tennessee swept the first set on all six courts in singles play. Szymkowiak continued his strong start to the year by evening the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win, improving to 11-0 in singles play this season. Rostislav Halfinger followed with a 6-2, 6-2 victory on court six, moving to 5-1 on the year and giving the Blue Raiders a 2-1 advantage.
Karim Al-Amin added to the lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court two, making it 3-1. Shu Matsuoka secured the victory on court five with a 7-5, 6-3 win, marking his eighth singles win of the season and extending Middle Tennessee's winning streak to four matches.
In doubles, all three matches concluded within a minute of each other. Matsuoka and Halfinger improved to 3-0 as a duo with a 6-3 win on court three. However, Utah clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win on court one and a 6-4 win on court two for its lone point of the night.
Head Coach Jimmy Borendame
"Guys responded well to the very poor doubles point in a great way in singles. We can do better and will today."
