Brewer, Rogers lead MTSU to 10-9 win over Austin Peay

Right-handed pitcher Landen Burch started on the mound for the Blue Raiders (5-3), sitting down the first three hitters with ease and striking out one.
The offense got going in the second inning with a Hayden Miller opposite-field blast to score Brett Rogers, making it 2-0 heading into the third.
The Governors (5-4) put four runs on the board to take the lead in the third, but it didn't last long as three Blue Raiders scored to regain the lead, 5-4. Nathan Brewer led the charge with a double, which scored Matt Wolfe. Rogers came up clutch again with a hard-hit single up the middle to score McKinley and Brewer.
Austin Peay tied the game once again, but MTSU bounced back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a Brewer home run to right field. The Govs added one more run in the sixth before Jonny Stevens came into the game.
Stevens worked well on the mound, earning his first win in his Blue Raider career. He pitched 4.1 innings, striking out four, and shut down the seventh and eighth innings. MTSU put up a run in each of those innings to make the score 10-6 heading into the ninth.
The Raiders allowed three runs before Bryant Beranek came into the game with the bases loaded and two outs. He struck the batter out to earn his first save of the season as MTSU took the victory, 10-9, on Tuesday.
By the Numbers
- 4: Redshirt freshman Brett Rogers went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles. He found his stride in right field, bringing his season batting average to a remarkable .714.
- 8: Tyler Minnick and Eston Snider extended their team-leading hitting streaks to eight.
- 12: Hayden Miller and Nathan Brewer hit the 11th and 12th home runs of the season for the Blue Raiders, bringing the MTSU average to just under two home runs per game.
"We had to overcome some things, but it was back and forth. Our guys responded well and had some really good at-bats when we needed them. We saw multiple arms out of their bullpen, and our guys competed very well."
Player Perspective (Brett Rogers)
"We were just trying to see the ball up all day, and when I got a fastball, I tried to stay above it. Coach (Nichols) is always emphasizing a runner on third base with less than two outs and other situations to get the ball in play."
Up Next
MTSU will host three teams this weekend. St. Bonaventure, UT Martin, and Old Dominion will visit The Reese for a round-robin series. It starts on Friday, Feb. 28, at noon, with the Blue Raiders facing UT Martin.
