Blue Raiders Fall to Vandy 4-3 in a Tough Contest
2/5/2025 10:24:00 PM | Men's Tennis
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — In a match that featured four out of six singles contests going to a third set and a total play time of four hours and seven minutes, Vanderbilt (6-2) outlasted Middle Tennessee (3-5), 4-3, with a clincher in a tiebreak on court six 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (2).
The doubles point was perhaps one of the hardest a Blue Raider opponent has had to earn so far this season, as Vanderbilt squeaked it out to take a 1-0 lead in the match. After the Commodores won 7-6 (7-3) in a tiebreak on court one, Shu Matsuoka and Jakub Kroslak of Middle Tennessee defeated Henry Ruger and Giusseppe Cerasuolo 7-5 to pick up their third doubles win of the season before Vanderbilt clinched the point on court two 7-5.
Kacper Szymkowiak moved to 6-0 on the year in singles play for Middle Tennessee, playing on court three for the first time this year. The Freshman defeated Vanderbilt's Michael Ross 7-6 (3), 6-2 to knot the match up at 1-1. Vanderbilt's Danil Panarin won 7-5, 6-4 on court two to put the Commodores back on top before Karim Al-Amin tied the match for Middle Tennessee on court one with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 80 Nathan Cox to once again tie the match at 2-2. Shu Matsuoka improved his season record to 5-2 with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win on court four to give Middle Tennessee its' first lead of the night at 3-2 before Vanderbilt tying on court five and clinching the win on court six.
Quote from Assistant Coach Josh McDermott
"The boys fought extremely hard today. Unfortunately it was not the result we wanted and it ultimately only came down to a couple of points, in a couple of matches, that decided the outcome. We are trending in the right direction and are confident these close matches will start to swing our way through the adjustments we are making. We want to say a big thank you to the crowd tonight, they showed up and really made themselves heard."
