Varjun fires career low on final day of the Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, LA. – The Blue Raiders carded a final round 6-under-par 282 on Tuesday to finish eighth at the 40th Annual Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club. Redshirt junior Markus Varjun led Middle Tennessee in the individual standings with a 4-under-par 212 to finish tied for sixth.
LSU earned the team title with a 54-hole total of 19-under-par 845, while Texas A&M finish second at 17-under-par 847 and host institution Louisiana finished third at 5-under-par 859. The Blue Raiders finished in eighth place at 13-over-par 877.
Louisiana's Malan Potgieter and LSU's Alfons Bondesson claimed individual medalist honors with a 54-hole totals of 9-under-par 207, while Texas A&M's Phichaksn Maichon finished third at 7-under-par 209 and Texas A&M's Wheaton Ennis and Little Rock's Freddie Turnell finished tied for fourth at 5-under-par 211. Varjun led Middle Tennessee in the individual standings with a 4-under-par 212 to finish tied for sixth.
The Blue Raiders will return to action when they compete in the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club on Mar. 21-23 (Friday-Sunday) in Statesboro, Ga.
The Lineup
• Redshirt junior Markus Varjun paced the Blue Raiders with a career-low final round of 6-under-par 66. He finished with a 54-hole total of 4-under-par 212. He finished the tournament with eight birdies and a pair of eagles.
• Senior JJ Zimmer, junior Luke Perkins and freshman Thad Whitfield finished tied for 40th at 6-over-par 222.
• Redshirt junior Carter Maneth posted a final round of 2-over-par 74 to finish tied for 65th at 13-under-par 229.
• Competing as an individual, freshman Charlie Bell fired an 8-over-par 80. He finished tied for 67th at 14-over-par 230.
Coach's Comments: Mark McEntire
"Today was great for the team," said Head Coach Mark McEntire. "Markus gave us another fantastic round and tournament - the second-best round all week. We also had a good bounce-back round from JJ. We still need to work on course management, but today gave us some momentum to bring into next week."
