MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee defeated Belmont, 7-3, in Wednesday night's matchup.
Middle Tennessee (10-6) settled into the game early with southpaw Cole Torbett on the mound in his first start of the year. He threw four innings, allowing just three hits and one run against the Bruins (4-13).
Belmont jumped out early with a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, but the Blue Raiders responded with a run of their own. Brett Vondohlen doubled, and Kenny McKinley brought him home with a hard-hit ball up the middle to tie things at 1-1 heading into the fifth.
The Bruins tacked on two more runs in the following frame, but the Raiders answered once again. Eston Snider was hit by a pitch and later scored on a Keaton Ray double to right field. Tyler Minnick drew a four-pitch walk, setting up Brett Vondohlen to hit his eighth home run of the year, a three-run shot to the opposite field, giving the Blue Raiders a 5-3 lead.
Belmont transfer Will Jenkins came in to pitch in the sixth and was phenomenal. Against his former team, Jenkins threw a four-inning save, allowing just one hit and no runs in his longest outing of his Blue Raider career.
MTSU added two more runs: one in the sixth on a Clay Badylak double and another in the eighth when Matt Wolfe hit his first career home run into the Lee Victory Wall.
Middle Tennessee took the victory, 7-3, and improved to double-digit wins on the young season.
