MTSU hosts Sam Houston in Murfreesboro this weekend

Blue Raiders look to build off momentum from Wednesday
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Softball is welcoming Sam Houston to Blue Raider Softball Field this weekend, March 14-16. There will be a double header played on Friday, with the first game set for 3:00 pm and the second following the conclusion of the first. The series finale is set for Sunday with first pitch at 11:00 am. The games will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats can be found at Stat Broadcast.
The Blue Raiders are coming off an upset victory over #19 Mississippi State on Wednesday, Mar. 12. Leila Ammon dominated for the Blue Raiders as she shut down the high-powered Bulldog offense with a complete game. Mississippi State averaged more than seven runs per game prior to the contest. Ammon lowered her ERA to a 2.81 which is the best among Conference USA freshmen.
Addy Edgmon evened up the game at two with a two-run home run over the right-field wall in the sixth inning. After not hitting a home run in her first 61 career games, Edgmon has now hit four in the last six. Ava Tepe later hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh to give MTSU the lead where Ammon shut the door in the bottom of the inning.
To open conference play last weekend, MTSU played a three-game series against FIU, where they secured one win. However, their lone victory was a dominant 12-1 performance, featuring eight extra-base hits. The 12 runs set a new team-high for the season and marked the most scored since March 3, 2023, against Yale. Additionally, it was the highest run total in a conference game during the Breeden era. Tori Coffman pitched a complete game, allowing just one run.
Jana Want was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week on Monday, Mar. 10 for the second time this season. In the three-game series at FIU, Want posted a .700 batting average and a 1.200 slugging percentage, bringing her OPS to 1.969 over the weekend. She recorded seven hits, including two doubles and a home run vs. the Panthers. Among Conference USA freshmen, Want leads in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, walks, and OPS. She also ranks second in batting average and RBIs as she continues her standout freshman season.
Scouting the opponent
Sam Houston – The Bearkats enter the series with a 12-13 record while opening 2-1 in conference play vs. Western Kentucky last weekend. In Sam Houston's first year in Conference USA last season, the Bearkats swept the Blue Raiders in the series. Sam Houston is led by head coach Garrett Valis who is in his seventh year as head coach. In his first six years, the Bearkats have recorded a 100-147 record and in his first season with the program he led them to the NCAA Regional Tournament where they defeated #9 Texas in the opening round. SHSU is led by Abigail Young who holds the best ERA in Conference USA with a 0.79 across 44.1 innings pitched.
