LYNCHBURG, Va. – Middle Tennessee capped off its opening weekend of Conference USA play with a dominant 5-0 win over UTEP.
The Blue Raiders struck first in doubles, as Ilaria Sposetti and Cassidy Mataia continued their strong form with a 6-1 victory over Wendy Zhang and Paloma Hennicaux. The duo improved their record to 11-3 on the season.
Alessia Truden and Rutuja Chaphalker once again delivered the clinching win for MTSU, defeating Hanna Telzynska and DeCora Antonie 6-3. Their 12th win of the season secured the doubles point and gave the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Chaphalker, a last-minute move-up in the lineup by Coach Tayo, was the first to put MTSU on the board in singles, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Antonie on Court 6.
On Court 1, Sposetti earned her 10th win of the season and first victory at the top spot, defeating Carlotta Mencagilia 6-3, 6-1.
Lena Peyer clinched the overall match for the Blue Raiders with a bounce-back performance, defeating Telzynska 6-2, 6-3. Mataia followed suit, closing out her match against Valeria Carreno 6-2, 7-6, to secure MTSU's 5-0 sweep over UTEP.
Thoughts from Coach Tayo
"I'm happy to get on the board with a conference win. We are battling through some injuries, as this season has been a grind. Looking forward to a short break, then back in action on Wednesday."
