MTSU bats come alive for a combined .442 batting average across the two games
How it Happened in Game 1
The Blue Raiders (16-19, 5-6) jumped out to a one-run lead in the second inning with a no-doubt home run from Ansley Blevins to right-center field. The Owls (9-26, 0-11) responded in the top of the third, scoring four unanswered runs to take a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third, with Jana Want at the plate and a 3-2 count, Want crushed a double to left-center field, scoring Macie Harter and cutting the deficit to two. Then, in the fourth inning, Want tallied another RBI with a sacrifice fly that brought home Ava Tepe, making it a 4-3 ballgame.
The Owls held the Blue Raider offense in check for the next few innings, maintaining their 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Want opened the frame with a double before Harter and Blevins both reached base, loading the bases. Ava Brooks then delivered a clutch single to left field, tying the game. With extra innings looming, Anyce Harvey stepped in as a pinch hitter and launched a deep sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Lexi Medlock and sealing the 5-4 walk-off win for Middle Tennessee—Harvey's second walk-off of the season.
Mary Martinez was dominant in relief, taking over in the third inning and delivering 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. Her performance lowered her ERA to 3.83, the second-best on the team. Martinez also reached 200 innings pitched in her career with her performance today. Harter, who leads Conference USA in triples, added her fourth of the season, while she and Want both recorded two hits apiece to lead the Blue Raider offense.
How it Happened in Game 2
If you're a fan of offense, Game 2 did not disappoint. The Blue Raiders erupted for 12 runs, tying their season high. MTSU got off to a hot start, scoring four runs in the first inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Ava Brooks that plated two.
Kennesaw State answered with two runs in the top of the second, closing the gap to 4-2, but the Blue Raider offense was just getting started. Addy Edgmon brought home Tepe with a sacrifice hit in the bottom of the inning, followed by an RBI single from Medlock to extend the lead to 6-2. Blevins then blasted her second home run of the day, a three-run shot to left-center, pushing the lead to 9-2.
The score remained unchanged until the sixth inning, when Medlock crushed her own three-run home run, sealing the run-rule victory. She finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a career-high five RBIs.
Blevins and Want also recorded two hits each, with Want drawing three consecutive walks—the second Blue Raider to achieve that this season, joining Anyce Harvey.
On the mound, Leila Ammon was stellar, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts—the second-most she has recorded in a game this season. The freshman allowed just four hits and now ranks fourth in Conference USA in innings pitched with 82.1.
Across both games, eight Blue Raiders hit .333 or better, showcasing the team's offensive dominance. Medlock and Want led the way with four runs scored apiece, while Harter paced the team with four hits. Blevins and Medlock each drove in five runs.
When asked about her two-homer performance, Blevins said the following: "Sometimes you just have to break it down to the basics and when I go up there, I'm just trying to hit for my teammates. Let go and let God, go Blue Raiders!"
