MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Blue Raiders capped off their three-match homestand with two wins over Conference USA opponents in the past two days, defeating Kennesaw State 4-3 and Jacksonville State 4-2.
Vs. Kennesaw State
In the first of two C-USA matches this week, the Blue Raiders secured a comeback win over the Owls. After losing the doubles point, it marked only the fifth time this season Middle Tennessee has failed to secure the doubles point. Kennesaw State took a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Lena Peyer got things started for the Raiders, claiming the first singles point of the match with a straight-set win over Sofia Madrid, 6-3, 6-0. The victory was Peyer's ninth of the season. Rutuja Chaphalker gave Middle Tennessee the lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kennesaw's Laura Nadaska.
The Owls tied the match with a win on Court 1, as Ema Baraniakova defeated Ilaria Sposetti 6-1, 6-1. Cassidy Mataia responded immediately with a hard-fought straight-set win on Court 4 over Izabelle Persson. Mataia battled back after an early deficit in the first set and cruised in the second to earn her sixth consecutive victory.
After a loss by Sara Conde on Court 3, the match came down to Court 6. Zenn Lim delivered for the Blue Raiders, clinching the match with a three-set victory over Terezia Baraniakova, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, securing a 4-3 win for MTSU.
Vs. Jacksonville State
Against Jacksonville State, the match played out in a familiar fashion for Middle Tennessee, as the Blue Raiders dropped the doubles point and went into singles play trailing 1-0. The Gamecocks also took matches on Courts 1 and 2.
Mataia extended her winning streak to seven with a straight-set victory over Polina Ramenskaja, 6-3, 6-2. Shortly after, Peyer put the Raiders ahead 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Irene Atrigas.
Sposetti bounced back after dropping the first set 6-0, rallying to win 0-6, 6-3, 6-0 over Lea Erenda, giving the Raiders a 3-1 advantage. Jacksonville State picked up another point with Zuzana Pavelekova defeating Conde 6-2, 7-5 on Court 4.
Once again, Lim stepped up in the clutch for Middle Tennessee. With two courts left in play, she secured the match with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ella Tuomela, giving the Blue Raiders a 4-2 win.
Thoughts from Coach Tayo
"We had a good weekend. I am happy with our performance, especially in singles," head coach Tayo said. "We have to get back on track with doubles, but it is good being able to compete consistently all around in singles. Looking forward to a good week of practice as we prepare for our last home matches of the season."
