MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee men's basketball program has signed its second transfer for the 2025-26 season in guard Marcus Whitlock Jr., head coach Nick McDevitt announced Tuesday afternoon. The Monticello, Ga., native will join the program as a redshirt sophomore from Cowley College.
"MJ is going to be a great addition to our program," said Coach McDevitt. "He had a terrific season this past year at Cowley College, which led to him being named First Team Junior College All-American. He has good positional size and can really shoot the basketball with deep range."
Whitlock Jr. was a force to be reckoned with in his lone season at Cowley and was one of just two freshmen to be named 2024-25 NJCAA First Team All-American. The guard totaled 561 points during his freshman campaign, the 21st most single season points scored in Cowley history, averaging 16 per game while shooting 42.3 percent from behind the arc. Whitlock Jr. led the program to a conference and region title, as well as a trip to the Elite Eight at the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship. He played and started in all 35 contests for the Tigers and shot 47.3 percent from the floor. His most notable performance at Cowley came against Colby Community College, tallying 32 points on 5-for-9 shooting from three-point range while also knocking in all 11 free throws awarded. He amassed 29 double-figure scoring performances, with nine of them being with over 20 points. On the ball control side, Whitlock Jr. averaged 0.8 blocks per game with 1.6 steals per contest.
Prior to transferring to Cowley, Whitlock Jr. redshirted his true freshman year at Kennesaw State during the 2023-24 season. A graduate of Newton High School, he helped lead the program to three state tournament appearances, advancing to the Sweet 16, Elite Eight and state semifinals in the three appearances. A four-time all-region selection, the 6-3 guard earned all-state honorable mention honors as a senior after averaging 14.1 points per game.
