MTSU opens CUSA play at Kennesaw State Saturday

KENNESAW, Ga. – Middle Tennessee opens its Conference USA schedule Saturday when the Blue Raiders travel to face Kennesaw State. Kickoff is set for 5 PM CT and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

MTSU enters the contest with a 1-3 record following a challenging non-conference slate. Quarterback Nicholas Vattiato has passed for 546 yards the last two games combined to go with three touchdowns, but the Blue Raiders will be looking to have a more balanced attack and get things going in the ground game.Defensively, the Blue Raiders are led by linebacker Parker Hughes and his team-leading 35 tackles while DT Damonte Smith has been the units disruptor with 6 TFLs, two sacks and an interception.

Kennesaw State, in its second season at the FBS level, is 2-2 and coming off a win over Arkansas State. The Owls have leaned on a steady defense and will look to protect their home field Saturday night. QB Amari Odom made his second start for the Owls last week and set the program record for most total offense in a single-game with 409 yards (308 passing, 101 rushing), earning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors. Odom is one of only two FBS quarterback this season to pass for 300, rush for 100 and have passing and rushing touchdowns.

This will be just the second meeting between the two schools with the Blue Raiders winning a 14-5 game last year in Murfreesboro.

» The Blue Raiders and the Owls will be meeting for just the second time in football. The first-ever game between the two schools came last season in Murfreesboro where the Blue Raiders took a 14-5 decision. This will be the first time MTSU has played at Kennesaw.
BLUE RAIDER NOTES

» This will be MTSU's first game in the state of Georgia since facing No. 3 ranked Georgia in Athens on Sept. 15, 2018.
» Since joining the FBS ranks in 1999, this marks just the second time MTSU has played on Sept. 27. The only other time came in 2013 at BYU.
» MT entered the Marshall game with 7 explosive plays of 20 or more yards and had 6 alone against the Herd to give them 13 for the season.

CONFERENCE OPENERS

» Dating back to 1952 when Middle Tennessee began Ohio Valley Conference play, the Blue Raiders own a mark of 45-25-1 in conference openers. MT was 33-13-1 in OVC openers and 6-6 in Sun Belt openers. The Blue Raiders are 6-6 in CUSA openers and own a mark of 24-7-1 when playing a league opener at home and stand 21-18 on the road.

HATHAWAY HAD HIMSELF A NIGHT

» Jacob Hathaway, a former soccer player at West Virginia Tech, enjoyed his best game as a Blue Raider against Marshall. The Monmouth, Wales native scored eight points and connected on field goals of 50 and 38 yards. His 50 yarder went down tied for the eighth longest in school history and the longest by a Blue Raider since Canon Rooker hit a 51-yard three-pointer against UTEP on Nov. 4, 2017.

MIDDLEBROOK IN GOOD COMPANY

» Running back Jekail Middlebrook enters the KSU game with 15 receptions to rank tied for second on the team and tied for fourth nationally among running backs. Landon Sims (Hawaii) is first with 20, followed by Marvis Parrish (WKU) with 17, Emmett Johnson (Nebraska) with 16, and Hollywood Smothers (NC State) with 15. Middlebrook's career season high for receptions is 22 set last year.

COX A WEAPON ON OFFENSE

» Junior College transfer Nahzae Cox is proving to be the Blue Raiders' go-to receiver after just four games. The junior from Fresno, Ca., leads the team with 20 receptions for 264 yards and four scores (10th nationally and 1st in CUSA). Cox also leads the team in yards per catch at 13.2.

DAMONTE WREAKING HAVOC

» Coming off a career year in 2024, Damonte Smith has picked up where he left off in a big way. Smith, a redshirt senior from Savannah, Ga., enters play this week with 14 stops, including 6.0 TFLs, two sacks and an interception. Smith's 1.5 TFLs/game ranks 18th nationally and fourth in CUSA. In fact, Smith came into his final season with 6.0 career TFLs and has already matched that total in four games this year.

THE 200 MAN

» In 36 career games played, Nicholas Vattiato owns 26 200-yard passing games to rank second all-time at MTSU. He tallied 10 games with 200 or more yards in 2023 and 2024 which ranks second most in a season behind Brent Stockstill's 12 in 2015. Vattiato has thrown for 200 or more yards 22 times in his last 27 games.
