Women's Soccer falls to Purdue on Thursday night, 3-0

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's program-best start to the season ended on Thursday night as MTSU conceded its first loss of the year to Purdue, 3-0.
The result dropped the Blue Raiders to 4-1-2 on the young season, while Purdue improved to 6-0-1 with the victory. The Blue and White are now 1-1 against teams from Indiana and will finish their Hoosier State slate with Evansville at home on Sept. 10.
''I'm proud of the way our team played; the characteristics it showed were that it can go toe-to-toe with anybody,'' MTSU head coach Aston Rhoden said. ''I thought the team managed the game and itself really well.''
The Boilermakers got off to a fast start when Irene Campo scored her first of two goals on the night inside three minutes, slotting her chance into the bottom-left corner following an early corner kick.
Freshman Ania Denham's free kick towards the top-left corner tested Purdue goalkeeper Krystina Wolf just three minutes later as MTSU looked to bounce back quickly.
Just after the 30-minute mark, McKenzie Carle scored Purdue's second goal of the night, following a pass from Jaiden Anderson, the Big Ten's scoring leader with the fourth-highest goal tally in the nation (7).
In the second half, Carle scored her second of the night and fifth of the season in a one-on-one situation in the 85th minute to seal the victory.
Megan Carroll, Luiza Junior dos Santos, and Jess Gray all pushed to get the Blue Raiders back in it late with shots on target, but were unable to break through the Boilermaker back line.
Purdue's offensive front, which is the most productive in the country, outshot MTSU 18 to eight on the night, with nine shots on goal to Middle Tennessee's five.
Despite the loss, MTSU goalkeeper Demi Gronauer made a season-high six saves and Junior dos Santos made her first start in Middle Tennessee blue, playing a season-high 51 minutes.

The Blue Raiders will look to bounce back on Sunday, Sept. 6 on the road against Alabama A&M at 2 p.m., before returning home to face Evansville on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
