MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Blue Raider and Lady Raider track squads will host the Middle Tennessee Invitational Sunday at the Murphy Center beginning at noon.
Both squads will begin the quest to defend their Sun Belt Conference titles under head coach Dean Hayes, who begins his 38th year in Murfreesboro.
The men's squad must replace five-time All-American Godfrey Herring this season, and leading the charge will be 2002 Indoor All-American Mardy Scales, who finished eighth last year at the NCAA Championships in the 60m. The Franklin, Tenn., junior will lead the squad, as they try to claim the 12th men's indoor title under Hayes in the last 23 years.
Senior Jasper Demps will look to get back on the right track after struggling through last season. Demps was an Indoor All-American in 2001 in the 60m. Last year's 400m conference indoor champion Fred Williams returns for Hayes, as does distance runner Geoffrey Lagat, who missed almost the entire indoor and outdoor seasons last year with a stress fracture.
The Lady Raiders will be lead by the duo of Kim Freeman and Letitia Eady, who were shared the Most Outstanding Field Performer award at last year's conference meet, which the women won by 57 points. Eady won the long jump at last season's indoor meet, as the Lady Raiders claimed five of the top six spots in the event. The women won the top five spots in the triple jump, with Freeman taking the top spot.
Sophomores Kishara George and Rosemary Okafor also return for the Lady Raiders, as does 2001 All-Sun Belt performer, Jerkita McClorin, who missed last season.
