Lady Raiders Win 8-0 in First Game of Silver Bracket at FSU Invitational

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Middle Tennessee softball (9-8) defeated Winthrop University (5-8) 8-0 in five innings in the Silver Bracket of the FSU Invitational on Saturday.
Second baseman Lisa Sherman went 4-for-4 with two RBI and Jennifer Martinez and Erica Buhl went 2-for-three with two RBI. Martinez picked up the win (8-2) and had five strikeouts.
Middle Tennessee fell into the Silver Bracket after losing to Iowa State 2-1 in the morning game, and was unable to move to the Gold Bracket. The Lady Raiders had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and runners on second and third, but third baseman Kristina Hieb grounded out to Cyclone pitcher Jen Bice.
Iowa State scored what would be the game winning runs in the top of the fifth inning. After the Cyclones Kelly Wardein doubled off starting pitcher Amanda Kendall, head coach Cindy Connelley went to the bullpen and put junior Stayc Preator on the mound. She got one out before Kristen Shipley singled and sent home Wardein then the Cyclones picked up their second run on an error.
Middle Tennessee got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when an error by Iowa State that sent home pinch runner Jennifer Polsteen. Preator was pegged with the loss and falls to 1-5.
The Lady Raiders will be back in action in the FSU Invitational in the Silver Bracket at 10 a.m. Sunday.
