MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - In just the second home game doubleheader of the season, the Middle Tennessee softball team (18-21, 1-5 SBC) dropped two games (3-0, 7-3) against No. 19 Louisiana-Lafayette (31-10, 1-5 SBC) in Sun Belt Conference action on Saturday at Lady Raider Stadium.
The Lady Cajuns scored their only runs in the first inning to defeat the Lady Raiders 3-0 in the first game. Second baseman Jill Robertson hit a three run homer over the left field wall to take the early lead.
Senior hurler Jennifer Martinez picked up the loss on the mound and falls to 12-8 on the year, as she allowed eight hits and had eight strikeouts. Senior pitcher Melissa Coronado for ULL improves to 10-2 and has 22 consecutive scoreless innings.
Middle Tennessee dropped the second game 6-3, as it was almost a mirror image of the first game, in second game action, as ULL scored two runs in the first inning. An error by Louisiana-Lafayette allowed a Lady Raider run in the bottom of the third inning, sending home Steffi Silva.
ULL tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a double by right fielder Missy Martin, which sent home third baseman Becky McMurtry. Summer Lapeyrouse's double sent home Martin. Middle Tennessee answered in the bottom of the fifth inning with one run, making it 4-2, with an RBI single by Kristina Hieb sending home Silva. It was Silva's 90th run scored in her career, which places her in fourth place all-time in the Lady Raider record books.
Centerfielder Laura Brockman, who owns the record for homeruns, hit her 19th homerun of her career in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull the Lady Raiders within one run 4-3. Brockman, who has been struggling at the plate, took ULL pitcher Brooke Mithchell's fastball over the left field wall for the dinger.
The Lady Cajuns answered again in the seventh with back-to-back homeruns. Alana Addison began the barrage with a two run homer over the center field wall, and Martin hit a solo shot over the right field wall.
