MARIETTA, Ga. - Cortney Mitchell hit a homerun, a double and scored three runs in Middle Tennessee's (15-8) 4-2 win over Nicholls State (11-17) at the Buzz Classic, hosted by Georgia Tech, Sunday. She was also named to the Buzz Classic All-Tournament team.
Mitchell put the Lady Raiders on the board in the bottom of the first inning when she hit her fourth homerun of the season over the right field fence. It was a driving shot that sent the right fielder over the temporary fencing and called a round trip by the umpires.
Nicholls State tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when Sarah Eads hit a double to center field and was sent home on an RBI single by Kristina Swart.
Mitchell struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning when she hit her 16th double of the season and fourth of the tournament. After an illegal pitch was called on Nicholls State pitcher Nichole Wagner to advance Mitchell to third base, she scored on an RBI double by Megan Cherinka to take the lead 2-1.
Cherinka hit her second homerun of the season with a two run bomb to straight centerfield in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Lady Raiders a 4-1 lead. It was her second RBI of the game and third run scored for Mitchell after she drew a walk to get on base.
Nicholls State's Stephanie Sasser scored pinch runner Kacie Braud in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 4-2. Sasser was called out when a strike by right fielder Michelle Wilkes gunned her down in a throw to third baseman Kristina Hieb.
Senior hurler Stayc Preator pitched the complete game to improve to 9-2 on the season. She allowed one run on eight hits and struck out nine.
Middle Tennessee travels to Chattanooga to take on UT-Chattanooga Wednesday March 26. First pitch action in the double header is scheduled for 2 p.m. Central.
