MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee men's and women's track and field teams will begin their quest for national championships Wednesday when the NCAA Track and Field Championships begin in Austin, Texas.
A total of 10 Middle Tennessee track standouts, including two alternates, are in Austin awaiting the opportunity to compete on the national stage.
Middle Tennessee is led by Mardy Scales, who will be defending his 100-meter national championship. Scales will compete in the 100-meter, as well as the 400 and 1,600-meter relay teams.
"Mardy has been there before so he will not be facing an unknown," Middle Tennessee track coach Dean Hayes said. "The competition is strong, but you are in the nationals now. You are on a national stage against the best the nation has to offer so the competition should be tough."
Blue Raider Linnie Yarbrough will compete in the high hurdles, while both Middle Tennessee relays teams are in the field. Xavier Darden, Scales, Wesley Dupar-Scott and Pedro Holiday will run the 400-meter relay, while the quartet of Darden, Scales, Dupar-Scott and Sean Waller participate in the 1,600-meter. J.J. Sturm is the alternate on the 400 relay, while Tim Hicks is the alternate on the 1,600 relay.
Lady Raider Rosemary Okafor will run the 400-meters, while Kishara George competes in the 400 hurdles.
