MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - After a little more than a three-month layoff, the Middle Tennessee women's golf team will get the spring season underway with a trip to Mexico. The Blue Raiders will compete in the seven-team BajaMar Invitational at the BajaMar Resort in Ensenada, Mexico which is about 55 miles south of San Diego, Ca.
The Blue Raiders will be competing against the likes of Nebraska, Southern Miss, North Illinois, Marshall, Eastern Kentucky, and Brigham Young. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday on the Scottish style links that will make up the BajaMar Invitational.
"We have been able to get outside this winter and get in a lot of practice," said Head Coach Rachael Short. "We're taking two freshmen, two sophomores and a junior so we have a young team but we are excited about our chances. I think everybody is excited to get the competition underway and this course will be quite a challenge because of the wind and overall course conditions."
The five players Short will take with her to Mexico are Taryn Durham, Jamey Dillard, Maggie McGill, Mallory Bishop, and Leigh Wilkins.
Durham, the team's top golfer as a true freshman, finished the fall campaign with the third-best stroke average in the Sun Belt Conference at 75.17. Dillard, a sophomore, was the team's second rated golfer in the fall with a 78.33 average and a top finish of 14th.
McGill, a junior, had the third-best average in the fall and is being counted on to have a great spring after a disappointing fall campaign. Wilkins, a freshman from Oakland High School, got better with each tournament in the fall and Short feels she could have an even better spring.
Bishop, another freshman, played in just one tournament during the fall but enjoyed a solid winter and did well in qualifying rounds.
Following a trip to Mexico, the Blue Raiders will travel to Mobile, Ala., for the Lady Jaguar Invitational on March 6 and 7.
