MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee cross country teams run for the third week in a row this Saturday, competing in the WKU Old Timers Classic at Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Blue Raider men and women have run twice in the opening two weeks of the season, first at the Belmont Opener in Nashville, Tenn., on September 1, and then last week at the UTC Opener in Chattanooga, Tenn., on September 8.
Middle Tennessee's women have been led by senior Sara Lunning and junior Marjorie Gombert, respectively, in the two events. Sophomore Ashley Comstock, the leading returning runner on the squad, injured an ankle during warm-ups for the first event and may return this week.
"We'll make a decision on Ashley after she warms up and sees how she feels," head coach Dean Hayes said. "But Marjorie has really come a long way and Sara is doing well. Plus [Sangau] Zamzam keeps getting better and really developing after having little experience when she got [to Middle Tennessee] a few weeks ago."
The Blue Raider men have been led by senior Tony Carufe and freshman Philip Benavides in the first two events along with junior Matthew Young. Hayes says the group continues to improve and will be joined by another newcomer in the next event.
"Carufe has run well along with Benavides, and Matt Young is coming along as well," he said. "If we can get through this meet, then we'll have a couple of weeks to rest and train. Three weeks in a row is tough, plus we'll have William Songock in the next race. He just got to school and we want to acclimate him as much as possible."
One other aspect to this week's race - both teams will run full distances this week for the first time, the women 5K and the men 8K. Full results from the race, which begins at 10 a.m. with the women and 10:45 a.m. with the men, may be found at wkusports.com.
