Tracksters Set for NCAA Championships
6/5/2007 2:25:00 PM | Track & Field/Cross Country
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Six Middle Tennessee tracksters begin competition Wednesday in the NCAA Track and Field Championships at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif.
Seniors Orlando Reid, Juan Walker and Sean Waller along with juniors Stephanie Tamgho and Carlos Morgan and sophomore Samuel Adade will all take part in the 86th Annual NCAA Championships for men and 26th Annual NCAA Championships for women.
Reid qualified for the national meet in both the 100- and 200-meters at the NCAA Mideast Regional in Columbia, Mo., two weeks ago. Reid placed second in the 200 in 20.58 and his time of 20.53 this outdoor season ranks fourth best in the nation. He was third in the 100 at the Mideast Regional in a personal legal best 10.25 and his time ranks 10th on the NCAA Performance List.
Reid finished sixth last year at the NCAA Championships in the 200-meters, earning the 80th All-America honor in program history.
Walker qualified in both the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump, placing fourth in the long jump at the Mideast Regional. Walker's high hurdles time of 13.80 at the Sun Belt Championships a month ago was good enough to earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships. His high hurdles mark ranks 17th nationally, while his mark of 25-6.25 in the long jump ranks 11th in the country. Walker garnered All-America honors indoors in the long jump in 2006.
Morgan qualified for the national meet in the long jump after posting a mark of 25-6.25 at the Sun Belt Championships. The mark ranks 10th nationally. Morgan has competed in just three outdoor events this spring because of injury (one unattached).
Tamgho qualified in the long jump after finishing fourth in the event at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Tamgho's best mark this season, 20-3, ranks 28th nationally. It will be Tamgho's first national meet during her Blue Raider career.
The Middle Tennessee 4x100-meter relay of Walker, Reid, Waller and Adade finished third at the Mideast Regional. The foursome's mark of 39.57 at the regional ranks eighth in the nation. Only one other time in program history has a Blue Raider 4x100 team earned All-America honors - the 2003 foursome of Pedro Holiday, Brad Orr, Mardy Scales and DJ Spann.
The 4x100-meter relay runs Wednesday at 3 p.m. Pacific Time, Reid is in the 100-meter prelims at 4:40 p.m. and Walker runs in the 110-meter hurdle prelims at 5:20 p.m. The 100-meter semifinals take place at 6:40 p.m. and the 110-meter hurdle semifinals are at 7:10 p.m. Also on Wednesday, Walker and Morgan participate in the long jump qualifying at 4 p.m. and Tamgho is in the long jump qualifying at 5:45 p.m.
On Thursday the long jump finals are at 4 p.m. for the women and 6:30 p.m. for the men. Reid will participate in the 200-meter prelims at 3:30 p.m. and the semifinals at 5:20 p.m.
The men's 4x100-meter relay finals take place Friday at 4:30 p.m., the 110-meter hurdle finals are at 5:35 p.m. and the 100-meter finals take place at 6:15 p.m.
The 200-meter finals take place at 10:50 a.m. on Saturday and will be shown live on CBS.
