MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee Track and Field teams will begin their indoor season at home at the Middle Tennessee Christmas Invitational Saturday, Dec. 6 at Murphy Center.
Middle Tennessee returns a strong cast of athletes in all the events, including Indoor All-American long jumper, Sarah Nambawa. Nambawa set a school record last season in the triple jump with a jump of 44-8.25 at last season's Sun Belt Indoor Championship.
The women will also look for some of its distance runners, Zamzam Sangau and Ashley Comstock to carry over momentum from the 2008 cross country season where both earned All-Sun Belt Honors.
2007 Outdoor All-American senior Samuel Adade is the men's best returning sprinter. The men's distance runners William Songock, Fetus Chemoai, Isaac Biwott, and Julius Kirui look to improve upon strong indoor seasons last year. William Songock won the men's 5K at the Sun Belt Outdoor Championship last spring and Fetus Chemoai won the 3K at last season's Sun Belt Indoor Championship. Also returning in jumps is Senior Carl Morgan.
A strong field of contenders from Belmont, Georgia Tech, Milligan College, Tennessee State, and Western Kentucky awaits the MT tracksters, as the meet will field a strong early season competition.
"This is great opportunity for the athletes to see where they are at before they go home for Christmas," said coach Dean Hayes.
Both men's and women's teams will get their first opportunity to avenge last February's disappointing finish at last season's Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship. The men's and women's team both finished in a heartbreaking second place to archrival Western Kentucky.
The meet will begin at 4 p.m. at the Murphy Center and should wrap up around 8 p.m. Results will be available post race at cfpitiming.com or goblueriaders.com.
