MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Blue Raiders completed the sweep of its three-game series with Missouri State with a 7-6 win on Sunday.
Middle Tennessee began the game by scoring one run in the first and two in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead headed into the third inning. Then the Bears scored four unanswered runs in the next two innings taking a 4-3 lead.
"Today's game was what I expected it to be. It was a pitcher and defensive game, if it was going to be an offensive game it was going to be close the whole game. We need games like this so it was good," head coach Steve Peterson said.
Middle Tennessee tied the game at 4 on a single to left field by Bishop and Robertson handed the Blue Raiders a two-run lead with his single to left field. Middle Tennessee ended the inning scoring four runs on five hits to take 7-4 lead.
Missouri State had a single and two doubles in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to one.
The Blue Raiders held on for the win as freshman Justin Guidry took the win on the mound while junior Coty Woods had the save. It was the first appearance for both pitchers this season. Guidry allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of work while Woods worked 1.2 innings allowing no hits or runs.
"Justin Guidry did pretty well. He got a big double play ball but he got behind hitters and some of that I think was he was trying to be a little too careful. I know he is going to help us. He helped us today and got the win," Peterson said.
At the plate, junior Drew Robertson went 3 for 4 with two RBI. Sophomore Bryce Brentz and junior Blake McDade added assistance as they were each 2 for 4 on the day.
"Drew has had a great weekend. He has come so far and is just getting tougher and tougher. I tell our team, the ability is there we just have to get tougher mentally. Defensively, offensively and pitching so much of it centers on your catcher. Drew is getting better he has had a tough to year but has talent and if he keeps it going has a good career ahead of him," Peterson said.
The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 24 when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to play Belmont at Greer Stadium at 3 p.m.
