MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Riding a four match winning streak, the Middle Tennessee volleyball team is heading to Colorado to take on Sun Belt foe Denver on Friday, and both 24th-ranked Long Beach State and defending Colonial Athletic champion VCU on Saturday.
"We're really looking forward to our opening Sun Belt match, we've put a nice win streak together against good competition, and we hope to continue that this weekend," said head coach Matt Peck. "I like where our team is right now. We've been playing hard, we're physical and very athletic, but we still have some things to work on."
The Denver match will mark the first of Sun Belt play for both the Pioneers and Blue Raiders, and will serve as the only regular season meeting between the two schools. Prior to the start of the season, each team was voted as the favorite to finish first in their respective division.
Middle Tennessee is entering the match on a hot streak, having defeated previously unbeaten Kansas and posting three victories last weekend to win the Middle Tennessee Invitational. The Blue Raiders currently sit at 7-4.
It was a banner week for Izabela Kozon, who took home her second Sun Belt Player of the Week honor in as many weeks, and also earned national recognition from both College Volleyball Update and American Volleyball Scouting Report, taking home National Player of the Week honors from both organizations.
Denver enters the weekend at 6-6 after going 2-2 in the Pioneer Classic last weekend, defeating both Gonzaga and Jacksonville State.
Long Beach State is currently ranked No. 24 in the country, and is looking to repeat as Big West champions. The 49ers are 6-2 this season with both losses coming at the hands of ranked opponents, No. 8 Texas and No. 23 San Diego State.
Despite going 27-9 last season, VCU has had a challenging start in their quest to repeat as CAA champions, and currently sit at 1-10 overall.
The Blue Raiders will begin play this weekend on Friday evening at 8 p.m. vs. Denver before taking on Long Beach State and VCU on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
