MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Blue Raider volleyball team (6-13, 2-3 C-USA) fell in three sets to a tough Rice squad (15-5, 5-1 C-USA) Friday evening at Alumni Memorial Gym.
Senior Ailime de Freitas led the team with 15 assists while junior Chelsea Ross notched 13 kills and senior Monét Marshall finished second with seven kills. Freshman Jacqueline Lux paced MT with 13 digs.
The Owls showed why they were projected to finish in top three in Conference USA at the beginning of the season as they took control in the first set with an early 11-1 lead and never looked back. MT closed the gap to six, 14-8, with a 6-3 run thanks to three kills by Marshall and kill from Ross and Miller.
That was as close MT would get while Rice finished the frame on an 11-4 run to capture the first set 25-12.
Rice jumped out to a 10-4 start in the second stanza before stretching the lead to twelve, 20-8, and eventually winning game two, 25-15, to take a 2-0 lead going into the third set.
MT went ahead 8-7 in the third set off a 4-1 run that was capped off by a kill from junior Rachel Shaughnessy. But the Owls outscored MT 18-7 the rest of the way to claim set three, 25-15, and the match.
The Blue Raiders will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m., against UTEP inside AMG for the dig pink game. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and the first 100 fans will receive a pink t-shirt.
