MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee men's and women's cross country teams continue their seasons at the NCAA South Regional Championships in Tallahassee, Florida Friday morning.
The Blue Raiders are slated to run their longest races of the season with the women running a 6K at 9 a.m. and the men a 10K at 10 a.m. at the Apalachee Regional Park cross country course, which has most recently held the South Regional Championship in 2012.
The Blue Raider men's team is slated to compete against 27 teams, including host Florida State who is ranked 21st in the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll (Nov. 6). In the final South Region rankings, which were released Nov. 6, Middle Tennessee was ranked fourth behind Florida State (No. 1), Ole Miss (No. 2) and Auburn (No. 3).
On the women's side, the recent Conference USA Champions will face off against 30 other teams in a 6K race. The Blue Raiders were ranked sixth in the South Region the final poll. Florida State again held the top spot with Vanderbilt (No. 2), Alabama (No. 3), Lipscomb (No. 4) and Mississippi State (No. 5) also ahead of the Blue Raiders.
Middle Tennessee will look for a strong team performance on both sides to vault them to the NCAA Championships.
At the C-USA Championships, the women's squad landed five runners in the top-20, including Hannah Maina, who placed second. Jackline Kiprono quickly followed with a ninth place performance, while Rhema Cheruiyot and Lucy Kapkiai finished 13th and 14th, respectively. Gladys David rounded out the scoring group with a 17th place finish.
On the men's side, the Blue Raiders placed third and were led by Shadrack Matelong's fourth-place finish. Amos Cheruiyot followed closely behind, placing eighth, while senior Peter Okwera registered a 14th-place finish. Hillary Rono and Alden Dixon concluded the top five for MT, finishing 19th and 22nd, respectively.
