BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Blue Raider volleyball team (9-21, 5-11 C-USA) fell 3-0 in their regular season finale to Western Kentucky (27-5, 15-1 C-USA) Saturday evening inside E.A. Diddle Arena.
Junior Chelsea Ross recorded her 15th double-double of the season with a team-best 13 kills and 12 digs, while senior Ailime de Freitas finished the match with a team-high 11 assists. Freshman Haley Morton was right behind with 10 assists, and senior Monét Marshall paced MT with six swats.
The Hilltoppers doubled up on the Blue Raiders with an 8-4 advantage to start the opening frame. After the Hilltoppers went ahead 14-9 later in the contest, MT responded with a 6-3 run that was sparked by Ross and Marshall combining for two kills and a block to help cut the deficit to 17-15.
WKU responded with a run of its own, outscoring MT 8-3 the rest of the way to grab the first set, 25-18, and take a 1-0 lead in the contest.
Set two belonged to the Hilltoppers as they never allowed the Blue Raiders to get any momentum going, winning the game,25-16. MT got as close as 10-7 after De Freitas found Ross for a kill, but WKU strung together an 8-1 run to go up 18-8, before eventually heading into the locker room with a 2-0 advantage.
MT hung tough with WKU for majority of the third set as neither team would hold a lead by more than two points early on. Both teams combined for 12 ties and four lead changes during the game.
The Blue Raiders went ahead, 18-16, after a combined block from sophomore Jazmyne Johnson and Marshall. However, the Hilltoppers turned it on as they scored the final seven points to win the set, 25-18, and the contest.
Despite a down year that saw a team riddled with injuries, the team is expected to return 12 of 15 players that look to be a contender in Conference USA next season.
