MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Blue Raider volleyball team (7-19, 3-9 C-USA) suffered a 3-1 setback to Marshall (13-14, 7-5 C-USA) Sunday afternoon at Alumni Memorial Gym.
Junior Chelsea Ross posted her 13th double-double of the season with a game-high 22 kills and team-best 14 digs. The Murfreesboro native has recorded a double-double in the past three games and it's her sixth game of the season with at least 20 kills and 10 digs.
Freshman LaDaisha Gillard and senior Monét Marshall each tallied nine kills while senior Ailime de Freitas led MT with 26 assists. Marshall went on to lead the team with six blocks as well.
The Blue Raiders started the opening set with a 10-5 lead that saw freshman Morgan St. Germain hold serve for four points during a 5-0 run. MT stayed in front until Marshall climbed back to tie the set, 20-20, before freshman Haley Morton found Marshall for a kill that sparked a 5-2 run to give the Blue Raiders a 25-22 game one victory.
Middle Tennessee opened up a 12-9 lead in the second set thanks to a quick 3-0 run that was capped off by an ace from freshman Jacqueline Lux and consecutive kills by Ross. Marshall scored four of the next five points to tie the set 13-all. From that point on, it went back and forth until the Herd outscored the Blue Raiders 6-3 while tied, 19-19, to grab set two 25-22.
Much like the previous set, the Blue Raiders held an early lead until Marshall tied the contest at 19-19. The Herd then finished the third set with a 6-1 run to win game three,25-20, and head into the fourth frame with a 2-1 advantage.
Marshall jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the fourth set and never looked back, going up by as much as 11,22-11. MT went on a 6-0 run at the end to cut the deficit to seven, 24-17, but the Herd scored on the following rally to win the contest 25-17 and the match.
MT will make the trek to Ruston, La., for a 7 p.m., match against Louisiana Tech before turning around two days later to host UAB at 1 p.m., on Senior Day in AMG.
