Turnovers get the best of the Blue Raiders
AUBURN, Ala. – Middle Tennessee (7-6) fell at Auburn (7-5) 64-48 on Monday night to close the 2014 non-conference slate.
The Tigers used a 10-0 run during the Blue Raiders six-minute scoring drought to take an 18-7 lead half-way through the first half.
The Blue Raiders were able to make a couple transition plays to get back within single digits after a Perrin Buford layup to cut the score to 23-14 with 6:32 remaining in the first half.
The Blue Raiders would head into the locker room trailing 31-20 with Jaqawn Raymond leading the team with 8 points and Jacquez Rozier out of the game with an ankle injury after a thunderous block.
"Jac Rozier is the heart and soul of our team and when he went down we kind of lost our way," Head Coach Kermit Davis said. "Give Auburn a lot of credit, they played with a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm."
MT returned in the second half to shoot 13 percent better to improve the night's shooting percentage to 40.5 percent and 35.3 percent from three-point range.
Turnovers proved to be costly with MT giving the ball away 24 times against the Tigers; the most turnovers for Middle Tennessee this season. Despite the turnover trouble, MT forced Auburn to turn the ball over 17 times with 10 Blue Raider steals to mark a season high in steals. Marcus Tarrance led the team with three steals; a career-high.
MT would bring the game within 10 points with 12 minutes remaining in the game but were not able to hold on.
This marked the sixth-consecutive game that the Blue Raider bench collected 20+ points in the game with the bench snagging 31 of MT's 48 points against Auburn.
Jaquel Richmond hit three second-half treys to end the night with a team-high 11 points for a career-high.
The Blue Raiders return to the floor to open Conference USA play on Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. to host UAB at the Murphy Center.
