SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (4-8) swept Fordham (0-12) in three sets Saturday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. MT will wrap up the weekend with a 6 p.m., match versus host Seton Hall.
"We played a pretty good match today. We tried to figure some things out and I thought we played pretty well in the end" said Head coach Matt Peck.
Junior Chelsea Ross and Jazmyne Johnson combined for 27 of the team's 37 kills to go along with a combined .333 hitting percentage, while Ross finished with her third consecutive double-double (15 kills, 10 digs).
Freshman Haley Morton tallied a team-best 17 assists and freshman Jacqueline Lux led the team with 11 digs. Junior Rachel Shaughnessy paced MT with six blocks while Johnson and senior Monét Marshall each finished with four swats apiece.
"Chelsea Ross and Jazmyne Johnson both played well for us, but the difference between today and yesterday was our passing system was a lot better" said coach Peck.
Defensively, MT held Fordham to a .70 hitting percentage while forcing the Rams into 25 attack errors.
A 9-3 run by the Blue Raiders while tied 16-all was the difference in the first frame as MT finally took the lead after tying Fordham on multiple occasions as the Rams started the contest with a 5-1 lead.
MT took advantage of four Fordham attack errors while Johnson and Marshall combined for three kills to help propel the Blue Raiders to a 25-19 game-one win and a 1-0 lead heading into the second stanza.
Much like the first set, MT got off to a slow start while Fordham held a 5-3 lead in the second set before outscoring the Rams 13-7 to go ahead 16-12.
The Blue Raiders kept the lead for good despite the Rams pulling to within one, 24-23, but freshman Maya Miller stopped any chance of the frame going into extra sets with one of her four kills to give MT a 2-0 advantage going into the third set.
MT dominated the third set while storming out to a 10-2 advantage to start the third stanza. Fordham would pull to within three, 10-7, following a 5-0 run before the Blue Raiders stretched the lead back to eight 22-14.
The Blue Raiders then scored the final three points of the contest to capture the set, 25-14, and pick up their first sweep of the season.
