Blue Raiders win 62-61 at Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Middle Tennessee (10-7, 3-1 C-USA) collected its 10th win of the season and extended its winning streak to three games after a thrilling 62-61 victory at Southern Miss (5-10, 0-4 C-USA).
Reggie Upshaw tied his career-high in scoring with 18 points with a clutch lay-up in the final seconds of the game.
The Blue Raiders started their 11th different starting-five combo of the season with Marcus Tarrance, Jacquez Rozier, JaQuel Richmond, Giddy Potts and Perrin Buford getting the start against the Golden Eagles.
Upshaw recorded 10 points in his first eight minutes of play to help MT take a 29-22 lead in the first half.
The Blue Raiders suffered a four minute scoring drought late in the first half that allowed the Golden Eagles to claw their way back in the game to tie the game at 29-29 when Jaqawn Raymond finally ended the drought with the team's sixth three-pointer of the night.
The two teams continued to battle back and forth as they went into the locker rooms at halftime deadlocked 33-33. The Blue Raider bench had collected 21 of the team's 33 first half points.
The Blue Raiders would lead by as much as nine in the first five minutes of the second half but the Golden Eagles would not give up as the game once again was all-tied up with 6:46 remaining at 53-53.
The Golden Eagles found its first lead of the second half after a Chip Armelin three-pointer with 5:50 left in the game.
The battle raged on into the closing seconds of the game as Upshaw drove in for the game-winning lay-up with 40 seconds remaining for his 18th point of the night to tie his career-high. Upshaw went 7-of-10 from the field and led the team with seven rebounds while adding two assists on the night.
"I thought Southern Miss competed their tail off tonight, they were physical with Armelin and Suarez playing terrific games," Head Coach Kermit Davis said. "We got off to a great start and I think we responded well at the end. Reggie Upshaw really put his nose down and made some plays."
The Blue Raiders forced USM into 18 turnovers in the game, but were outrebounded by the Golden Eagles 27-22.
Potts led the starters in scoring with his third double-digit scoring outing of the season with 10 points.
The Middle Tennessee bench was huge once again as it out-scored USM's bench 35-3.
MT will look to extend its streak at C-USA preseason favorite, La Tech, on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. The game against the Bulldogs will be nationally televised on FSN as they are currently 4-0 in Conference USA action.
